Pour marquer le 100e anniversaire de naissance de Françoise Sullivan, le Centre international d’art contemporain de Montréal, en collaboration avec le Département d’Histoire de l’art de l’Université McGill, la Bibliothèque, la Collection d’arts visuels et la Faculté de droit de l’Université McGill ont invité Abigail Susik, spécialiste internationale du Surréalisme, à donner une conférence sur Françoise Sullivan et sur l’impact qu’a eu le Surréalisme à Montréal le 16 novembre 2023. Abigail Susik a rencontré Françoise Sullivan alors que celle-ci faisait partie de l’exposition Surrealism Beyond Borders qui s’est tenue au Metropolitan Museum of Art de New York à l’automne 2021 et par la suite à la Tate Modern de Londres, U.K.. Abigail Susik soutient que le surréalisme s’est développé dans toutes les disciplines artistiques et que Françoise Sullivan y tient une place exemplaire en danse. Cette conférence sera un ajout original à la compréhension de l’œuvre de Françoise Sullivan mis dans un mouvement artistique international. Même sans lieu public et sans exposition régulière, le CIAC continue à être présent à Montréal et sur son site web par des projets ponctuels et spécifiques. Cette conférence fait partie d’une série d’« Hommages à Françoise Sullivan » qui lui seront rendus au cours de l’année 2023 pour signaler l’importance de sa production artistique et son 100e anniversaire de naissance. Pour réaliser ce projet, nous comptons sur les amis et les amies du CIAC. Nous vous invitons à faire un don à notre campagne de financement, don qui sera versé au Fonds des activités publiques du CIAC. La Conférence d’Abigail Susik se tiendra le 16 novembre 2023 à la Salle Moot de la Faculté de Droit de l’Université McGill, bâtiment rattaché à la Maison Ross, maison qui a servi de studio à Françoise Sullivan de 1947 à 1950 et qui a été le lieu du premier spectacle de danse moderne au Québec, le 3 avril 1948. Ce spectacle, au titre de Récital de danse, avait été proposé par Françoise Sullivan et il a été réalisé avec la collaboration de Jeanne Renaud et de plusieurs artistes du groupe des Automatistes dont Jean Paul Riopelle à la scénographie pour Black & Tan Fantasy et à la régie pour Dualité, deux chorégraphies de Françoise Sullivan. La Maison Ross est ainsi un lieu emblématique dans la carrière de Françoise Sullivan. Votre don, peut importe sa valeur, vous donnera un accès confirmé à la Conférence d’Abigail Susik. To mark Françoise Sullivan’s 100th birthday, the Centre international d’art contemporain de Montréal, in collaboration with the Department of Art History, the library, the Fine Arts collection and the Law Faculty of McGill University invited Abigail Susik, an international specialist in Surrealism, to give a lecture on Françoise Sullivan and the impact Surrealism had on Montreal on November 16, 2023. Abigail Susik met Françoise Sullivan while she was part of the exhibition Surrealism Beyond Borders held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in the fall of 2021 and subsequently, at the Tate Modern in London, U.K. Abigail Susik says that surrealism is developed in all artistic disciplines and that Françoise Sullivan holds an exemplary place in it in dance. This Lecture will be an original addition to the understanding of the work of Françoise Sullivan placed in an international artistic movement. Even without a public place and regular exhibitions, the CIAC continues to be present in Montreal and on its website through punctual and specific projects. This lecture is part of a series of « tributes to Françoise Sullivan » which will be paid to her in 2023 to underline the importance of her artistic production and her 100th birthday. To carry out this project, we count on the friends of the CIAC. We invite you to make a donation to our fundraising campaign which contributes to the CIAC public activities fund. The lecture by Abigail Susik will be held on November 16, 2023 in the Moot Hall of the Faculty of Law of McGill University, a building attached to the Ross house, which was Françoise Sullivan’s dance studio between 1947 and 1950 and the place where the first modern dance show in Quebec was presented on April 3, 1948. This show titled Récital de danse was Françoise Sullivan’s initiative and it was produced with the collaboration of Jeanne Renaud and several artists from the Group of the Automatists including Jean Paul Riopelle to the scenography for Black & Tan Fantasy and at the stage management for Dualité, two choreographies of Françoise Sullivan.
