VENICE BIENNALE Harald Szeeman is artistic director of the 48th Venice Biennial, which will be held June 13 to November 7 1999; he will also head the next edition of the Biennial, in 2001. The main exhibition, Aperto überAll, refers to the tradition of the Aperto wing of the Biennal, which was initiated by Szeeman himself and which highlights the work of young artists. The director has selected 99 artists whose works will be presented in several spaces in the city. Most of the Italian artists are young: Maurizio Cattelan, Luisa Lambri, Paola Pivi, Massimo Bartolini, and Bruna Esposito. Senior artists include James Lee Byars, Dieter Roth, Martin Kippenberger, Mario Schifano, and Gino de Dominicis. Pipilotti Rist, from Switzerland, and William Kentridge, from South Africa, will also participate in the event.
