VENICE BIENNALE

Harald Szeeman is artistic director of the 48th Venice Biennial, which will be held June 13 to November 7 1999; he will also head the next edition of the Biennial, in 2001. The main exhibition, Aperto überAll, refers to the tradition of the Aperto wing of the Biennal, which was initiated by Szeeman himself and which highlights the work of young artists. The director has selected 99 artists whose works will be presented in several spaces in the city. Most of the Italian artists are young: Maurizio Cattelan, Luisa Lambri, Paola Pivi, Massimo Bartolini, and Bruna Esposito. Senior artists include James Lee Byars, Dieter Roth, Martin Kippenberger, Mario Schifano, and Gino de Dominicis. Pipilotti Rist, from Switzerland, and William Kentridge, from South Africa, will also participate in the event.

In the national pavilions, the Biennial will present the works of the following artists, among others:

United States : Doug Aitken, Louise Bourgeois, Jenny Holzer, Paul McCarthy, Bruce Nauman, Shirin Neshat, Jason Rhoades, Pat Steir, Ann Hamilton
Germany : Rosemarie Trockel, Dieter Appelt, Katharina Fritsch, Stephan Huber, Wolfgang Laib, Sigmar Polke et Katharina Sieverding
Switzerland : Roman Signer
England : Douglas Gordon
France : Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster
Portugal : Jorge Molder
Japan : Tatsuo Miyajima

WHITNEY BIENNIAL

The next edition of the Whitney Biennial, which waw to have been held in 1999, has been postponed to the year 2000 to underline the millennium.
