WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR
This February issue aims at offering a variety of materials, while creating a link between the items. The content gravitates around the issue of the role of new technologies in contemporary art practice, a question which stemmed from the work on our own publication. In two of the main columns, The "News of the Month" and "The Interview", our attention was focused on Montreal. Rossitza Daskalova highlights the context of new media in Montreal. Her article entitled "Art and New Technologies in Montreal. On the Occasion of the Opening of Technoboro" covers organizations and their activities which make the production and presentation of the art of new technologies accessible to both artists and the public.
On the occasion of his exhibition at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Sylvie Parent conducted an interview with Gary Hill, an artist who in his work plays with technological achievements and succeeds in transcending their boudaries. For "Spotlight on a Web Site", Sylvie Parent examines Sensorium; her commentary brings forth the manifestation of poetic expression achieved through highly advanced technological means. In the same train of thought, we are happy we were able to put the emphasis on the poetics of the Internet for this month’s selection of ten Web projects.
I would like to thank Gary Hill, whose work was shown at the CIAC in the Cent jours d’art contemporain of 1989, for taking part in the magazine. Special thanks to Rosa Martinez, who, due to her busy schedule during The 5th Istanbul Biennial, was able to respond to the interview prepared by Rossitza Daskalova for the second issue of the magazine, featuring the 5th Istanbul Biennial, only after the event was closed. We are pleased to publish this interview now, while the article on the Istanbul Biennial will be available for consultation in our archives.
We welcome your comments and look forward to your participation.
