Artificial intelligence and artistic creation

INTRODUCTION

AI is invading every aspect of our lives today. “Intelligent” artifacts are used in all areas, from social media to finance, from science to defense, from politics to robotics and domotics. And AI already has a big impact on artistic creation.

Machine learning systems thus differ from even the most sophisticated tools in a crucial way. They are called intelligent agents. And these intelligent agents are also starting to invade the field of art. They collaborate with artists and create works of art themselves. They thus open up new possibilities, at the same time as they raise new questions, notably on the nature of creativity and the status of the work of art.

The CIAC MTL has been at the forefront of the computer revolution in contemporary art since the 1990s. The CIAC’s Electronic Magazine (1997-2014) has offered, throughout these years, a multifaceted space for reflection to web artists as well as art critics and historians. The Magazine has enjoyed international influence. The CIAC now wishes to open a new space for reflection devoted to the relationships that are woven between artificial intelligence and artistic creation, and more broadly, to the cultural impact of machine learning systems in our societies.
