Our friend Gabor Szilasi passed away on Friday, April 10, 2026, at the age of 98. This comes as a shock to all of us who loved him, even though we knew his health was fragile.

Through his photographs, he revealed an intimate side of Quebecers with portraits full of humanity and respect. His photos also serve as a testament to Québec society: its cities and villages, its cultural and other events, and his coverage of the visual arts scene.

Gabor Szilasi was a great photographer and an important witness to our time on earth. His vision was to bear witness to people’s humble daily lives, photographed with precision and an objective gaze full of compassion. Although his photos capture frozen moments in life, they nonetheless convey a life in motion, a story that is unfolding or that we can invent. We feel as though we are right where the action is taking place, in communication with the human spirit.

We offer our deepest condolences to Doreen Lindsay, his wife, and Andrea Szilasi, his daughter. Together with them, we mourn the loss of a sincere and generous man.

We invite you to watch the documentary Gabor by Joannie Lafrenière.
